An abdominal ultrasound lets an accredited sonographer look at the organs in your abdomen in real time, using sound waves rather than radiation. Some people have this scan because a doctor has recommended it; others choose it to better understand their health and then discuss the results with their GP.
In about 20–30 minutes, the scan can provide information about your:
- Liver — size and texture, including signs sometimes associated with fatty liver
- Gallbladder & bile ducts — such as gallstones or thickening
- Kidneys — including stones, cysts, or changes in size or structure
- Pancreas & spleen — size and structure
- Abdominal aorta — including its width, which your doctor may wish to monitor
There's no radiation and nothing invasive — just a small handheld probe and some gel.
Is this scan right for you?
An abdominal ultrasound isn't necessary for everyone. If you're unsure whether it's appropriate for your situation, we'd encourage you to discuss it with your GP first — particularly if you have symptoms, a relevant family history, or an existing condition.
