Coronary Calcium Score

Understand your risk
A Coronary Calcium Score test is a quick, non-invasive CT scan that measures the amount of calcium build-up in the arteries of your heart. This calcium, or plaque, can indicate the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) long before symptoms like chest pain appear. By identifying plaque early, you and your doctor can take proactive steps to reduce your risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular problems.
The test is fast, painless, and requires no special preparation. You may want to consider this test if you:
- Are over 50 years old with moderate cardiovascular risk based on the Australian Heart Foundation’s CVD risk assessment
- Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
- Have type 2 diabetes
- Have a family history of premature heart disease
- Smoke or used to smoke
- Are overweight or have a sedentary lifestyle
A coronary calcium score test is not recommended for people at low risk of heart disease with no major risk factors, or for those who already have symptoms, as other diagnostic tests are more suitable. It is also generally not advised for adults under 50 unless there is a strong family history or a known genetic predisposition to heart disease.
