Your heart beats around 100,000 times a day, yet most of us never see it in action. An echocardiogram — often just called an "echo" — changes that. Using the same safe ultrasound technology used in pregnancy scans, it produces live, moving images of your heart from the outside of your chest.
In one appointment, a sonographer can assess the size and thickness of your heart muscle, measure how strongly it's pumping (your ejection fraction), watch each of the four valves open and close, and use Doppler imaging to see blood moving through the heart in real time. There's no radiation, no injections and no recovery time — you can drive yourself home and return to your day straight away.
Where a Coronary Calcium Score looks at the arteries feeding your heart, an echocardiogram looks at the heart itself: the muscle, the valves and the pump. Together they give a remarkably complete view of your cardiovascular health.

An echocardiogram is an ultrasound scan of the heart. It's one of the most widely used cardiac tests in the world because it's safe, non-invasive and remarkably informative — showing not just what the heart looks like, but how well it's functioning with every beat. The scan assesses four key things: the pumping strength of the heart muscle (left ventricular function, or ejection fraction), the size and thickness of the heart's chambers and walls, the condition and movement of the four heart valves, and the flow of blood through the heart using colour Doppler. It can help detect or monitor conditions such as heart valve disease, heart muscle weakness (cardiomyopathy), the effects of high blood pressure on the heart, fluid around the heart, and the cause of symptoms like breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness or a heart murmur. Because it uses ultrasound rather than X-rays or CT, an echocardiogram involves no ionising radiation and no contrast dye. This makes it well suited to preventive assessment and to repeat monitoring over time. It's an ideal complement to a Coronary Calcium Score: one looks at the plumbing (your coronary arteries), the other at the pump and the valves.
