Faecal Occult Blood Test

This test detects faecal occult blood — small amounts of blood in the stool that are not visible to the eye. Detecting blood is not a diagnosis: it can be caused by many things, including minor and benign conditions, and a result does not tell you the cause. If blood is detected, the important next step is to discuss your result with your GP, who can advise whether any further investigation is appropriate for you. For population bowel screening, the free National Bowel Cancer Screening Program is also available to eligible Australians.
What's included
This test detects hidden traces of blood in your stool, which may indicate colorectal diseases, including bowel cancer. Conditions such as haemorrhoids and fissures may also cause blood to be present in the stool.
